[IC Information]Character Name: Princess Celestia
Series: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
Gender: Female
Age: Well over 1000. Probably much older.
Species: Winged Unicorn
Appearance: Celestia is a pure white pony. Her feathered wings are immense when unfolded, as they often are, and the horn in the center of her forehead is similarly quite long. Her main and hair are both pastel green/pink/purple, and flow with a shimmering grace independent of any wind or motion of hers. She has a stylized sun on her flanks, and typically wears a golden tiara and shoes.
She is 14 hands high at the shoulder, which is about pectoral-high on a six foot tall male human. This puts her eye at six feet up exactly.
Personality: Celestia, being practically divine in pony terms, is the pinnacle of wisdom and virtue in Equestia. Thousands of years of life and rule had taught her patience, kindness, and empathy. In normal life she is peaceful, serene, and content almost too a fault.
Despite her position, Celestia doesn't stand on ceremony in the slightest if it isn't required. Her formal visits to Ponyville generally carry great pomp and circumstance, with her being borne in a carriage and her royal guards deployed while the town breaks its neck preparing, but that's because the ponies feel they ought to give their princess that due, and Celestia understands their need and desire to. On her own, she isn't above just dropping by Ponyville out of the blue to pick up a friendship report, without any ceremony. She doesn't really care how other ponies behave; she's completely fine with Pinkie Pie showing no real manners while eating in her presence, for example. When she's put on
too high a pedestal, she's not above a harmless joke to break the ice -- when her teacup was being refilled after every sip, she only pretended to sip from it to provoke a tea-spilling refill. She has a sense of humor, and isn't afraid to laugh at herself even in private.
All that being said, Celestia does exhibit a desire to put aside the boring parts of ruling. She won't cancel the Grand Galloping Gala no matter how boring she finds it, but she's not above inviting six ponies who really don't belong there in the hopes that they'll shake it up, nor is she above ditching the event to laugh with those ponies at the local donut shop after they've wrecked the Gala.
When her subjects are threatened with harm, though, Nice!Celestia vanishes, replaced by a stern and forceful ruler who has no patience for those who would cause such chaos. Against a serious threat, Celestia is direct and to the point; she will explain the situation, but she won't beat around the bush doing so. If it's a foe she believes she can fight, she won't hesitate to directly attack; if not, she'll deploy whatever forces she has available to ensure it's stopped. And if the threat comes from someone who meant well, but really ought to know better... well, Celestia will still be very upset. But in that case, she can be talked down; she understands everyone has to make mistakes.
In the end, Celestia isn't afraid to make hard choices to do what's right. After all, she banished her own sister for a thousand years out of necessity, no matter how deep the pain it caused her, for the good of her subjects.
Abilities: Princess Celestia is an immensely-accomplished wielder of magic, thanks to both raw power and breadth of knowledge. Though her role is to raise the sun each day, she also took over the duty of raising the moon as well for a thousand years without any noticeable strain. (She won't be doing either in Revenance, naturally.) She has an extremely broad array of magical spells at her disposal. Most of then are transformative or utility, like lock spells or telekinesis; unicorn magic in general is actually relatively weak in the attack department, since Celestia has only ever fought one opponent (and lost), needing to resort to the Elements of Harmony for any other serious threat. She can still put up a good show against an average foe, but a direct attack isn't her best suit.
Her wings allow her to fly, stand on clouds, and manipulate weather.
Items: Her tiara and shoes.
History: In the long-ago past of Equestria, two ponies rose up against the evil ruler Discord, the spirit of disharmony. Princess Celestia and her sister Princess Luna used the Elements of Harmony to turn Discord to stone and free ponykind from their misery under his rules. Having done so, they assumed co-rulership of Equestria, bringing stability to its disordered lands. For a very long time, the two shared duties: Celestia raised the sun each day, and Luna raised the moon each night.
Luna grew jealous, however, of her sister; ponies loved the day, but slept through the night. Perhaps influenced by an outside force, Luna refused to lower the moon one day, letting the jealousy in her heart turn her into the evil Nightmare Moon. Knowing that eternal night spelled the end of ponykind, Celestia used the power of the Elements of Harmony to banish Nightmare Moon to the Moon. She then assumed sole rulership of Equestria, using her magic to turn day to night and back once more.
Slightly under a thousand years later, Celestia came to believe that a young unicorn named Twilight Sparkle had a great destiny before her. Under the guise of an admittance test to a gifted school for unicorns, she set Twilight the near-impossible task of magically hatching a dragon's egg. Twilight succeeded in this, and Celestia took her on as her personal apprentice, to groom her and watch over her for the day that destiny might prove true. She also took it upon herself to raise the baby dragon, grooming him to be Twilight's assistance.
Well aware that Nightmare Moon would soon be released from her imprisonment, Princess Celestia sent her student out into the world to learn the magic of friendship in preparation for that dark night. When Celestia was to show up at the Summer Sun Festival, she was nowhere to be found; instead, Nightmare Moon appeared in her stead, having overcome Celestia in her plan to produce eternal night once more.
Twilight, and her five friends, used the Elements of Harmony to defeat Nightmare Moon and return Princess Luna to her original form. Celestia, freed again, all but begged her little sister to return to her side -- and Luna did.
After that, Celestia charged Twilight with learning about friendship and reporting back to her in her studies, and for the most part made occasional appearances to guide her and hear what she's learned. Trouble arose, however, when Discord broke free again; Celestia bid the six pony heroes to use the Elements on them, but they became corrupted by Discord and strained their friendship to the breaking point. Celestia, imprisoned somewhere unknown, used her power to return Twilight's friendship reports to her, reminding her that friendship is worth fighting for. This catalyzed Twilight's return to the fight, and Discord's eventual defeat.
Her next major appearance comes during the wedding of Shining Armor and Princess Cadance -- who turns out to be Changeling Queen Chrysalis, attempting to take over Equestria to parasitically feed off its love. In righteous anger, Celestia attacks her in defense of her subjects... and promptly loses the battle. Despite this, the Changeling swarm is defeated in the end, and Celestia gladly officiates the REAL wedding.
